Dirty Make-up Brushes Cause Acne

Myth or Fact? Your makeup brushes can break you out.

…Fact!

When you leave your brushes dirty, even if only for a day, your brushes are harboring residual makeup, dead skin from your face along with your natural oils. This causes bacteria to begin to breed. When you apply your makeup the next day, you are applying all of that debris, dead skin, and bacteria. This is horrible for acne prone skin. The funny thing is, we only seem to notice the residual makeup.

How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes
This is a question our Acne Specialists get regularly from clients. There are several ways to clean your makeup brushes, but to do it while remaining acne-safe can be a little tricky. Using dirty makeup brushes can definitely break you out.

The truth of the matter is that you want to clean your makeup brushes after every use. If you are only using a brush shampoo and wearing makeup daily, that becomes unrealistic to maintain and can damage your brushes. The solution? Use a daily brush cleaner to get rid of all that residual debris and shampoo with a safe shampoo once a month for a deeper clean. This will help your skin to stay safe and you won’t be over washing your brushes and damaging the hairs on them.

Supplies You Will Need:

  • An acne safe daily brush cleaner like Sephora Daily Brush Cleaner of Japonesque Makeup Brush Cleanser (if you’re a client, see your acne safe makeup list for options)
  • Paper towel
  • A gentle cleanser like Acne Specialist’s DMAE Mud Cleanser or Johnson & Johnson Baby Head-to-Toe

Daily Cleaning of Makeup Brushes:

  • Before you even put on your makeup you want to grab a paper towel.
  • Spritz the paper towel 4-5 times with an acne safe daily brush cleaner like Sephora Daily Brush Cleaner
  • Apply your makeup
  • Dust your brush gently side to side on the saturated areas of the paper towel until no more makeup shows
  • Dust each brush you use after in the same manner. *If you run out of room on your paper towel, make a new one with the brush cleaner.

Monthly Cleansing of Makeup Brushes: (do not skip and just do daily)

  • Gently rinse brushes in lukewarm water in the opposite direction of the brush handle
  • Use a tiny amount of gentle cleanser like Acne Specialist’s DMAE Mud Cleanser and massage gently into bristles. ALWAYS AWAY FROM HANDLE
  • Rinse with lukewarm water until water runs clear
  • Lay brush flat on clean towel and press excess water out (not fraying bristles)
  • Set aside to air dry
  • Move on to next brush
